Acclaimed Belgian director Chantal Akerman (The Captive, Le Chignon D'Olga) takes Joseph Conrad's first novel, about a Dutch fortune seeker stranded at a river trading post in the Malaysian wilderness, and fashions a vibrant ode to the jungle and the ocean, and the bankruptcy of colonialism.

Having married Zahira, the Malaysian adopted daughter of trading post operator Lingard in the expectation that he will inherit a promised wealth, Almayer (Stanislas Merhar, In the Shadow of Women) finds himself supervising a failing enterprise while Lingard is off chasing rumoured gold mines. Almayer and Zahira meanwhile, are at loggerheads over the future of their daughter Nina, whom the devoted Almayer has sent to a boarding school in order to ready her for a life in Europe. Piece by piece, and under the keen lens of Akerman, Almayer's dream begins to fall apart.
