Tamar van den Dop’s second feature film, Supernova, is premiering in the UK today at the Cambridge Film Festival.
We were fortunate to speak to van den Dop herself just before this exciting premiere and she told us of her enthusiasm to be sharing with the world the film she wrote, directed and starred in.
Van den Dop was asked to adapt Do van Ranst’s novel, My Dad Says We Save Lives, and worked on the script over ten years, for which she was given a lot of artistic freedom. She jumped at the opportunity to “capture that existential storm you feel when going through adolescence†and she did this through exploring the laws of physics, from where the film gets its title.
In Supernova, we see the world through the eyes of teenager Meis, in the middle of nowhere in Holland. Nothing ever happens apart from a car occasionally into the house. There is little action but the strong characters and sense of expectation never leaved you bored. Van den Dop has created a truly original film with Supernova.
A committed independent filmmaker herself, van den Dop shares FilmDoo’s vision of bringing a global platform to foreign and independent films and is hopeful for the future of independent cinema and representation of women in the industry.
